Friday, November 25, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 21 continued:

Carly had not been to a dinner party in such a long time.  She was sure she should enjoy herself, for everything was fabulous.  Yet, she was reservedly excited.  Surely it was a lot to ask of her to sit beside the leering Mr. Stone.  He seemed to have reserved his manners for mixed company.  She would not soon forget.  Carly secreted away an impish thought that she would influence Mr. Thompson next time on the place settings.  She smiled at her hidden, wicked thoughts.
As everyone started chatting around the table, the butler oversaw as footmen served the first course.  Delicious, creamy soup, fish, and a variety of vegetables were served in addition to the lovely meats, fruits, and artichokes displayed around the table.
“Oh, dear Creighton!  You have outdone yourself again.  You always do for us though.”  Lady Margaret cooed at Lord Huntington as her chin rested flirtingly upon her gloved hand trying to be as close to him as possible.
Lord Huntington seemed preoccupied, yet gracious as he said, “Always for the Pembrookes,” in his deep resonating voice.
“And what of the Hansen’s, my naughty lord,” Miss Amelia Hansen flirted on his other side.
Lord Huntington uncomfortably cleared his throat and nodded to Miss Amelia, saying, “Why of course.  How could I ever exclude you, Amelia?”
Nodding her approval, she looked maliciously towards Lady Margaret, their competition ripe with envy.  The air sizzled with intensity.
Creighton must control this situation, he thought.  And why had he sat between these two anyway?  Had Thompson conspired against him?  Or mother?  And where was she when he needed her expert skills at manipulating decorum?
Gaining the attention of Lady Madeline, he said, “Mother wished for me to give you an hello, and that she shall be here soon.  She misses you terribly.”
Snorting impatiently, Lord Pembrooke exclaimed, “It has only been a fortnight since they saw each other, my lord.  Hardly time to miss each other.”
Ignoring her husband’s comment, Lady Madeline said, “I miss her too, dear.  She is such a good friend, always so concerned about me.”  Lady Madeline coughed into her delicate lace handkerchief, a deep body-wrenching cough.  As it subsided, she self-consciously looked back at Lord Huntington to say, “I am doing much better, though, you must tell her.”
As they began the meal, Lord Huntington continued, “You have not been overdoing it I pray?  Mother and I are worried that you do too much.”
“No, dear.  Do not worry so.”
Lord Pembrooke sighed heavily obviously impatient with this constant subject.
Mr. Stone put in, “It must be consoling to have such a devoted friend as Lady Huntington.”
“Why, yes!  She has always been my best nurse, Mr. Stone.”  Lady Madeline beamed back at him.
Carly noticed the dark circles under her eyes and wondered at her health conditions.  She visibly had endured much suffering, but seemed to have born it well.  Lord Carter poured wine for Lady Madeline as she began coughing again.
Quickly, Miss Hansen got up from her seat to attend to Lady Madeline.  She seemed positively strained over her condition.  “Lady Madeline, is there anything I can do for you?”
Lady Madeline silently shook her head before she drank from the goblet that Miss Hansen held for her.
“I daresay you get all the attention, mother dear.”  Lady Margaret smiled at her mother, but her eyes were ice cold.
Carly instantly wished that this young lady would, instead, show compassion for the obvious discomfort her mother endured.  Then, unexpectedly, she noticed the cold eyes upon herself.

What is wrong with Lady Margaret Pembrooke?  So uppity and snobbish!

Monday, November 21, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 21 continued:

Mr. Stone was blessedly interrupted in his insinuations as four beautiful ladies and two gentlemen, accompanied by Lord Huntington and Lord Carter entered the anteroom.
Carly was grateful for any distraction from this impious man.  Happy to see women with whom she might socialize, she wondered if guests would be an irregular occurrence at Huntington Manor, for these were the first guests for supper.  Of course there had been social calls, but none such as this.  The numbers made the party even, which Carly supposed was intended.  She was still amazed that Lord Huntington would wish her presence among this gentry.
Lord Huntington, impeccably dressed and handsome as ever, stepped towards her and Mr. Stone, saying, “Lady Blakemore, I wish to introduce you to Lord and Lady Pembrooke and Lady Margaret Pembrooke, their daughter.  They are our closest neighbors.  Lady Madeline, I might add, is my mother’s best friend.”  Lord Pembrooke bowed, seeming rather snobbish.  However, Lady Pembrooke, expensively dressed in a simple, yet beautifully designed pale green gown seemed genuinely kind and happy to meet her.
But their daughter seemed to have taken an instant dislike to Carly.
But why?
She shared the same gorgeous blonde hair as her mother, equally expertly coiffed.  With a bearing of great confidence, she obviously had no compunction for displaying herself for all to see.  Adorned in the finest, most sensual pink gown Carly had ever seen, she flaunted her exquisite creamy white shoulders and bust proudly.  Why she should look at Carly so unkindly, she did not understand.
Lord Huntington continued, “Mr. Stone has had the privilege of knowing the Pembrooke’s for many years.  However, may I introduce you both to Miss Mary Murtaugh, a cousin of the Pembrooke’s and presently their houseguest?”
Hair color similar to Carly’s own, she was dressed in an expensive gown as well, but more modest than Lady Margaret’s.  But even she held a noticeable malice towards Carly.  Confused, Carly was gracious as possible toward them both.
The most fiery red hair belonged to the fourth lady.  Splendid blazing ringlets caressed her shoulders, setting off her emerald green evening gown and deepest brown eyes.  She was stunning.  Remarkably so.  The lady seemed quite taken with Lord Huntington, Carly noticed straight away.  However, the redhead hardly gave notice to the governess’s presence.
Her accompanying friend, not as handsome as she, was quiet, yet kind, his smile mild mannered.  His inconspicuous brown hair and unremarkable eyes helped melt him into the background.
Lord Huntington’s introduction of them did not answer Carly’s questions as to their relationship with him.  Brother and sister, the Hansen’s from London.  That was it.
But the tension in the air had grown.  Carly studied the evening’s guests considering from whence the friction came.  Some of the apprehension was obvious, but being unfamiliar with society’s competitions and deceptions, Carly was unsure of herself with these fine ladies, let alone with the gentlemen.
As the ladies curtsied to one another and the gentlemen bowed, they said their how do you do’s.
Curiosity over Lady Blakemore’s presence was tangible, so Lord Huntington continued, “Lady Blakemore is Jonathon and Elspeth’s new governess.”  Lady Margaret and Miss Murtaugh looked knowingly at one another.  They already knew it seemed.
“She is already a favorite at Huntington Manor.”  Smiling devilishly at Carly, Lord Huntington made Carly feel herself color at his words.  Miss Hansen did not seem overly pleased either about his teasing nature towards his governess.  Would anyone befriend her this night?  Someone besides the abhorrent Mr. Stone?
“And, of course, Mr. Stone often has business with the Marquis and I,” Creighton continued, seemingly unaware of the rifled feathers in the room.
“As well as Lord Pembrooke, my lord.”  Mr. Stone proudly chimed in.
“Yes.  Yes, of course.”  Lord Huntington held his arm out to Carly to advance to the dining room, signaling everyone to follow.  She did not miss the way his eyes devoured her.  He leaned over, whispering into her ear as they walked, “You look exquisite in your pretty new gown, Lady Blakemore.”
She shivered noticeably.
As he escorted her through the Red Room’s doors, she looked up into his face with a shy smile, and said, “Thank you, my lord.”  He nodded and smiled, his dimple showing.  Carly’s heart flip-flopped in her chest.
As Mr. Thompson, the unassuming butler, quietly showed everyone to their places at the table, and Lord Huntington seated Carly, she noticed the brilliant red walls, magnificent décor, and the elaborately set table.  Exquisite centerpieces and foods for the first course of many were exhibited for all to enjoy.  Everyone commented on how superbly everything looked and smelled.
What an evening this would be!

Carly is excited to meet new people.  Will they become her friends?

Join me Friday for more from this dinner party.

Friday, November 18, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 21:

Carly was alone with Mr. Stone.
From behind her, enjoying her fine curves, Mr. Stone commented, “So you have come upon hard times, eh?  A beautiful creature such as yourself should not have to rely on employment to uphold care, needs, and most especially…wants.”
Turning to face him, startled at his depraved words, she insisted, “And how do you come by this information, sir, may I ask?”  Fuming, she wondered if Lord Huntington had disclosed their private business arrangement to this odious man.
Tantalized by her spirit, Mr. Stone observed her through lustful eyes, “It is quite simple, really.  You are an exquisitely, charming young lady in the position of governess.  Completely unnecessary.  What other explanation is there?”
She paced impatiently in the anteroom of this particular dining room called the Red Room, angry at herself for being early to supper.  She was unaware that Mr. Stone had contrived to be early just in case he had such a private opportunity to be with her.  Would anyone please come into this room and spare her his vile presence?  Determined never to be early again, at least when he was present, Carly inwardly scolded Lord Huntington for not showing up promptly.
Feeling terribly aware of herself as Mr. Stone watched her endlessly from the settee, Carly thought he almost seemed to be salivating.  Disgusting!  Millesant had taken particular interest in her efforts tonight with Carly’s hair and gown, for she knew there were to be guests for a dinner party.  Millesant always tried to do things that would please Lord Huntington, and now, her new friend, Lady Carly.  Wearing a deep sapphire blue evening gown that Miss Thompson had only finished that day, she had thrilled at its beauty and the way it had made her look.
But now she was conscious of every ounce of her pale skin that showed; aware of her every curve that was enhanced; blushed for every beguiling feminine attribute that had been accentuated; for it seemed to have captured this gentleman’s awareness of her, and it was discomfiting.  She had mistakenly believed that her new wardrobe would alleviate the pressure she had felt at being ogled.  In her humility, she did not realize that some men would do so anyway.
Not wishing to be rude to her master’s guest, she tried holding her tongue; but he was impossible!  “And what makes my situation seem ‘hard’ to you, sir?  I am a lady and am being treated as such.”  Looking away from Mr. Stone, yet again in disgust, she attempted interest in a painting on the wall, fidgeting nervously with her hair.
“Is that so?”  Mumbling under his breath, he whispered, “Much to my amazement,” wondering how Lord Huntington was managing to keep his hands off this slip of a thing.  “Many an eligible bachelor would sweep you off your feet if given half a chance, I daresay.  I myself…am very eligible.”
Fists tightened at her sides, Carly turned, asking, “And is this a proposal of marriage, then?  Shall I ask my employer’s approval,” she fumed.
Mr. Stone only chuckled at her feistiness, his black eyes twinkling.  Licking his lips, as if anticipating a sweet treat, he said, “You have great spirit, my lady, well worth the challenge.”
“I guarantee you will be unsuccessful if you see me as nothing more than a challenge, sir!”
“We shall see, my lady, we shall see.”
His boldness sickened her.
Continuing his shameless scrutiny, he began, “I usually get my way…”

Odious man!  Carly is mortified.

Monday, November 14, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 21:

Mr. Stone reflected upon his life as he rode the countryside with the others.  Beautiful women such as Lady Blakemore always had that sort of effect upon men, he assumed, turning their minds to the contemplation of marriage, settling down, and children.
Laughing to himself, he was amused at the image of himself as a devoted husband and father.  He could be quite humorous sometimes.  Again, he was diverted as her image returned to his mind, his mouth watering at the thought of kissing her soft, delicate shoulders.  Lady Blakemore’s fiery temper tantalized him…just the right qualities in a lover, he thought.
Returning to his previous thoughts, memories flooded his cankered heart as he remembered his own father.  Abusive, hateful, drunken, slothful; these were only a few of the words that came to his mind in reflecting upon this hated individual.  His face grew dark and angry with the memories of his father beating his beloved mother who always tried her best to protect her children from his violent hand.
His two older sisters, younger brother, and he had always dreaded their father’s return from his drunken escapades.  They would all be so happy—briefly—while he was gone, knowing his return would only bring pain and grief, having spent what little wages he earned on spirits, and then questioning why his wife could not provide a kinder welcome and better meals for him upon his return.  He could almost recall the stench that was his father.
The ugly cruelty he grew up with was beyond conscience, and he had become numb to the affects, learning survival was all that mattered.  Running away by the age of eleven, he had never returned.  Not knowing what had become of his two sisters or his little brother, all he had come to care about was his own full belly and satisfied needs.  Learning to take what he wanted, if given half a chance, he had done well by these methods.
Thievery had been his only recourse, having no food or shelter.  Quickly, he became good at it, enjoying the exhilaration he felt while pilfering.  He learned that people trusted his innocent face, and he swiftly took advantage of this knowledge.
Having observed how others had good occupations that provided steady-enough income, he determined he would much rather have suitable living conditions, food and drink, rather than not, on a very regular basis.  As he satisfied his first most basic needs, he began to hire himself out, saving his wages in various locations, as well as the results of his burglaries.  His stealthy ingeniousness had brought him great rewards and many business partners.
As he grew older, he found he had saved much of his resources, and found opportunities to invest them in legitimate ventures.  Finding himself able to mix more and more with higher society than he had come from, he even adapted as best he could their language, manners, and dress, all copied to the last detail.  Even tutors had been hired to this end.
He had become a master of deception.
Determined to fit into the very best of families, he, therefore, created opportunities for his benefit.  Upon doing so, he had stumbled upon his most profitable venture thus far.  Rubbing his hands together, he thought no man could be happier.  Now, many years later, he lived the life he had only dreamed possible all those years ago.
Now nearing his fortieth year, he smiled a satisfied smile when he thought of all he had accomplished in his short lifetime.  Briefly, an image of his mother’s sweet countenance appeared before him, a look of disappointment upon her lovely, yet scarred face, at his unwholesome activities.  Feeling a twinge of guilt, he only allowed himself this for a moment when he thought of all the legitimate business he also conducted.  Knowing his mother would never have approved of his choice of lifestyle, he figured she was not here to say anything.
Sometimes he had been surprised at his coldness in dealing with his fellowman, or in most cases, fellow-woman, but figured he had inherited this attribute from his father’s well-demonstrated example of manhood.
Sniffing quickly, wiping at his perspiring brow, impatient to be done with these depressing memories, he whipped at his horse brutally, kicking its hind quarters to speed his journey onward as he began again to think on more appealing thoughts; that of the lovely Lady Blakemore.

A wicked man.  What is his significance?  Read on...

Friday, November 11, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 20 concluded:

Carly’s eyes took him in, aware of his fine-looking suit, with the accompanying grey overcoat, black boots and hat.  She noticed how his dark hair stuck out from his hat in wild curls brushing the collar of his overcoat.  His crisp, white cravat was always a sharp contrast to his tan skin and, though it was only past noonday, his beard was showing already.  Trembling, she found his presence entirely commanding.
Mr. Stone cleared his throat.  “What a remarkable young lady you are, Lady Blakemore, to be out riding alone.  And with such abundant zeal.”
Startled from her reverie, just now aware of Mr. Stone’s presence again, Carly looked at him with a furrowed brow, responding a little fervently, “I enjoy the freedom I feel on horseback, do you not also?”
Chuckling, in response, to her hasty temper, Mr. Stone looked over at Lord Huntington as if to tell him he had just sweetened the deal between them.
But Creighton was still looking at Lady Blakemore, oblivious to Mr. Stone’s satisfaction.  He asked, a sudden worried look upon his face, “Do you not have an escort with you today, Lady Blakemore?”
“Yes, my lord.”  Looking over her shoulder, she spotted Henry in the distance, “See, just there…”
Relief showing upon his face immediately, he said, “Good, good.”  After making eye contact with the groomsman, exacting continued loyalty to his important task, Creighton continued, “We must ride together one morning.  I shall show you the grounds more extensively.”
Enthusiasm glimmered in her eyes as she answered, “I would like that very much, indeed.”  Carly was excited at the prospect…or was it the hope of being alone with her master?  She reprimanded herself for such a silly thought.  As if dinner weren’t enough time alone.
“Then it is a plan.”
Continuing to look at each other, Carly nervously said, “Well, I am sure I am holding you up from some purpose, so I shall bid you farewell.”  They lifted their hats to her as she nodded and said, “Gentlemen.”  As soon as Lord Huntington let go of Clover, Carly was off like a bolt of lightning, wild hair and all.
Lord Hayden Carter had watched his best friend, Lord Huntington, through this entire exchange with great enthusiasm as he saw between this young girl and his long-time friend a magnetism that was incredibly palpable.  Knowing Creighton as well as he did, he also knew his friend was completely besotted.  And quite oblivious to his obsession.
But Hayden also sensed in Lady Blakemore a confusion or fear of Creighton beyond her attraction for him.  In these brief moments, he realized this young lady was awfully innocent.  Creighton would have to tread carefully.
Mr. Stone’s thoughts were completely different, his attention captivated by this juicy little tidbit he had discovered under the roof of his business partner.  His head was already swimming with ideas, plans, and wishes to be satisfied.
Grinning a lustful grin to himself, he joined in on the pleasure of watching her departing figure.

Chapter 20s conclusion shows a perfect example of Carly's love of nature and horseback riding...and romance.

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 20 continued:

Very handsome, as well, possibly five and thirty years old, with smooth blonde hair and black eyes that matched the color of his hat, there was something unsettling about him straight away.  His eyes burned into her as if she had nothing on.  Blushing at such a thought, she quickly dismissed these feelings, saying instead, “My Lord Carter—Mr. Stone.”  Carly tipped her head formally, “The pleasure is all mine, I assure you.” Smiling brilliantly at them, she noticed again how Mr. Stone stared openly at her.  Uncomfortable still with the way he was ogling her, she looked away to ask Lord Huntington, “Do you often ride your grounds, Lord Huntington, for I rarely see you do so?”
“Nearly every day.  Sometimes more than once a day.”
“You have a very grand estate.”  Smiling radiantly, Carly continued, “Which I have enjoyed very much.  Of course, today the rain halted my morning ride…but it’s wonderful out here now.”
Nodding his agreement, Creighton continued, his own eyes not able to pry away from her, “I was only just showing Mr. Stone around the grounds, for he has been here but rarely, unlike my close friend, Lord Carter, who claims this estate as his second home.”  Breaking away his intense gaze momentarily, Creighton looked at Lord Carter with amusement.  The Marquis grinned with no apparent regret to the truth of this statement.
Carly’s mare had not stopped pawing at the ground, and Carly tried to calm her by leaning over, her long hair falling about her, and whispering to her, “Shhh, Clover Girl…” and patting her gently on the neck, “Shhh…” she encouraged, but it was not working.  Lord Huntington’s magnificent black stallion had become excited because of the mare.  Clover was now turning around in a circle, bored with the talking.  Carly’s hair flowed freely all around her as she tried to gain control of the beast.  Lord Huntington reached out, and with one swiftly controlled movement, caught the horse’s bridle holding her still.  Clover seemed to know her master well.
Lord Huntington was now face to face with Carly, and she could only stare back into his striking green eyes which bore into hers, aware only of his essence.  As he reached out and brushed her hair back that had tangled upon a button, she started.  “Oh…,” was all she could say, her gloved hand going to her glowing cheek.
Lord Huntington and Lady Blakemore were completely oblivious that there were two other gentlemen sitting, waiting on them.

Friday, November 4, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 20 continued:

Feeling invigorated by the speed, Carly also felt cleansed somehow with the spring breezes that embraced smells of flowers and fresh rain blowing in her face.  Carly was enjoying her horse and ride and did not care where she went as long as it was fast, furious and free.  Clover was kicking up clumps of muddy wet grass as she flew enjoying just as much their time together.
Riding so quickly that her hat became loose, before she could grab it, it flew from her head into the air, but Carly was too carried away in this feeling to care.  Her hair was next to be buffeted by the breeze, and it felt glorious to have the pins picked and pulled by the wind till it was free to blow wildly behind her.  Laughing vibrantly, she shook her head and squealed an exhilarating squeal of delight at the feeling of freedom she was enjoying, oblivious to anyone around her.  Laughter spurred the horse on faster, enjoying her riding companion’s exuberance.
Creighton and his guests watched from a distance as the lovely young lady thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors, completely unaware of them.  Noting how her hat flew off behind her, he thought he might retrieve it for her, until he saw her magnificent tresses come loose, thinking of nothing else while he watched, enraptured by her exquisite loveliness.  She was elegance and energy personified.
Carly soon realized that she was coming upon three riders.  They were coming from a different direction but intersecting with hers.  Unenthusiastically, she slowed the reluctant horse to a trot and then came to a halt.
Stunningly gorgeous in her cranberry-colored riding habit, her hair all about her shoulders and face and curling from the humidity, her eyes shined bright with excitement from her ride as her breathing slowed.  Clover, her beautiful chestnut mare was prancing impatiently as if she would take off again any second, their race having been cut short.  The three riders sat astride their steeds facing her now with great admiration showing upon all their faces.
Blushing at their perusal, she looked down with reserve, until she was composed, which was difficult because of her energetic feelings of moments ago.
“Good afternoon, Lady Blakemore.”
Carly answered him, “Good afternoon, Lord Huntington.”
“May I introduce you, Lady Blakemore, to two of my business partners, The Most Honourable, The Marquis of Southwickshire, Lord Hayden Carter and Mr. Melville Stone?”  Turning to look at the gentlemen, he continued, “Lady Blakemore has recently come to Huntington Manor as my,” he hesitated, correcting himself, “as the new governess.”
They each tipped their hats to her in greeting, saying, “How do you do?” seemingly both genuinely pleased to meet her.
The Marquis of Southwickshire had a similar build to Lord Huntington, and handsome, and kind, she thought.  He looked all of five and twenty, tops.  His dark auburn hair curled expertly under his hat, touching his brown collar.  Honey-brown eyes sparkled, staring curiously at her.  She could sense in this gentleman a certain mischief.  He smiled his boyish grin without reserve.
Instantly, she liked him.  .
Mr. Stone, however, was a different story.

Hmmm...what will these gentlemen be like, I wonder?  Good, bad or simply flirts?

Thanks for reading with me today.  If you haven't already read it, you might find last Friday's post beguiling.

(I skipped some content about the children in Chapter 19 & in Chapter 20.  If you'd like to read it, click on the authonomy.com site to the right.)

Finally.  He had received their calling card, and had visited.  It had taken days.  But, she knew she could rely upon him to offer better, for in return, he had extended an invitation.
Tonight!
Oh, to be in his presence again!  What joy she would feel.

*******

The rest of the afternoon was Carly’s, and since she had not gone for her morning ride, because of the rain, she was determined to now that it had stopped.  Quickly changing into her worn cranberry riding habit, she headed impatiently for the stables.
“Good afternoon, Joe.  What a lovely sunny day it is turning out to be after all.”  Her cheeks were rosy from her rush and excitement.
Joe looked at her through crinkled eyes and said, “Well, now it is milady.”  Chuckling at making her blush, he said, “I’ll git yor ‘orse for ‘ee.”  Hollering into the stable, he said, “’Enry, git yor ‘orse ready for escortin’ Lady Blakemore, lad!”
Carly sat down on the bench and watched as Joe prepared Clover Girl, who seemed just as excited and impatient as herself.  “I love this time of year, do you not, Joe?”  Taking in a deep breath of fresh air, she exclaimed exuberantly, “Mmmm!  I love the way everything smells after it rains.  So incredibly fresh!  Everything is so green …and the flowers are glorious!”
Joe just smiled as she babbled on and on.
“I do not think I know what kind of trees these are, but I do love the beautiful pink and white blossoms.  Are they apple trees, I wonder?  I do believe the horses shall be happy soon if they grow apples, do you not think so?”  Joe shook his head noting that she was always like this before a ride, giddy and rosy cheeked.
“’Ere you are milady.  An’ where shall ‘ee be riding about today?”  Knowing full-well that the master would most likely ask this because he was about, Joe was glad that Lord Huntington always seemed to want to know her whereabouts.
“Dear me, I do not know.  Wherever Clover Girl decides to take me, I guess.”
“I think even Clover likes yor new name for ‘er.  Make sure ‘Enry follows you, and ‘e don’t get distracted none, milady.  Them’s orders from the masta’ hisself.  Now then, enjoy yor ride.”
Barely hearing him, she flew off already at a gallop.  Henry had his work cut out for him this afternoon, Joe thought to himself with a chuckle.

Friday, October 28, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 19 continued:

(Today's blog is rather long...but I think it worth it.  Do you?)

The next day, while the children were having lunch with Nanny, Carly decided to explore the house again.  She would love to know more about this magnificent place and the individuals which had occupied it all these centuries.  Houses like these were bound to have great stories: lovely romances, insane offspring, or ghastly ghosts.  Until Ethel had left, Carly had felt that she had had her own haunting.  She shivered with abhorrence.
Carly’s explorations were showing her just what an amazing place Huntington Manor was, as if she hadn’t already come to that conclusion.  In the middle of a remote hallway, she came to a halt before two magnificently carved doors.  She thought to herself, this must be the ballroom, and said aloud, “I simply have to see.”
Opening one of the huge double doors, it creaked hauntingly as she peeked inside.  There was only one set of draperies which had not been completely closed, lucky for her; but it was enough light to show her a very grand room indeed.  Quietly tip-toeing over to the sun-lit window, Carly flung the draperies wide.  Light flooded the dance floor and dust danced and swirled playfully in the sudden beam of sunshine.  Seeing the intricate cut floors extending down the ballroom, she gasped in delight.  She regretted doing so, for the dust that was settling upon the magnificent floors was now invading her lungs.  She began to cough.
Never before had Carly been in such a large room.  Deciding that she liked the color combination of pale yellow walls and deep cranberry draperies, she wound the curtain around her waist, pretending as if she were wearing the most insanely beautiful gown.  She imagined the room filled with guests, a ball in full swing.  She giggled with luxury.  She would explore more.
Carly looked up noticing the enormous chandeliers carefully covered.  They reflectively sparkled where exposed to the light.  Incredible artwork was displayed upon the ceiling above, showing off the richness of this grand room.  Pulling another drapery chord to better see, she glimpsed the furniture that was covered with huge cloths, peeking to see cranberry upholstered furniture as well.  Here and there, paneled walls displayed detailed murals from nature.  Large encrusted crystal sconces were hung between each of these panels, light dazzling in rainbow hues upon the walls.
Looking behind another drapery, she discovered a fabulous set of French doors.  Gazing out through the enormous glass panes, she saw they lead to an exquisitely manicured terrace.  In her mind’s eye, she again imagined impeccably dressed guests strolling by, arm in arm, enjoying their evening.  Immersed in her daydream, the coolness of the glass upon her hand pulled her back to reality.  She sighed, fogging the glass, disappointed her dream had not been real.  The sun warmed the glass quickly, melting the fog away.  Carly continued her perusal out the window.  Her next survey showed the terrace ending with a majestic staircase descending to splendid gardens below.  As if this very room wasn’t enough, such grandness, craftsmanship and beauty astonished her completely.  Turning around, she rested her back against the glass door, gazing longingly at the ballroom.  Blinking dreamily, her thoughts continued; thoughts of a glorious ball
Why should she care about such silly things?  Why even dream?  Such gloomy thoughts did not become her.  Smiling beguilingly, Carly’s mind worked again on happier imaginings.  All of a sudden, she glided out onto the ballroom floor as if she were a ballerina.  Twirling round and round, waltzing with an imaginary partner, she looked this way and that in a dance, her abundant pale yellow skirts swirling about her tiny figure.  Finished, Carly’s skirts billowed out as she sank into a slow, provocative curtsey.
Carly startled when she heard slow, precise clapping and quickly stood with her hand to her breast, horrified.  As Lord Huntington made his way to her side, she worried out loud.  “I do hope it is all right?”  After the incident at the lake, and again at the cottage, Carly was not sure where she could go without his wrath coming down upon her.
But Lord Huntington was different today.
His boldness startled her as he took her tiny waist in one strong arm, making her gasp.  He took her hand placing it upon his broad shoulder.  Her other hand he took and extended with his own.  Looking down into her eyes, he captured her gaze so that she dare not look away.  She was afraid, and yet something within her ignited at his warm touch.
In his deep voice, he commanded, “Shall we?”
Without waiting for her response, Lord Huntington maneuvered Carly into a waltz.   Around the ballroom they danced to the music of imaginary musicians, but the only thing heard were her skirts swishing and their feet moving, in time together, on the highly polished floor.  Powerful arms carried her through the waltz as if she were flying instead of dancing.  Lord Huntington was a very fine dancer.  It was awkward for Carly to meet his eyes, but again and again their eyes locked.  His dark eyes were intoxicating, penetrating.  Her heart pounded vigorously, her lungs scarcely took breath.  His hand on her back held her close enough to him that she could feel his warmth, capture his musky scent.
Slowing smoothly, gracefully, till they came to a gentle stop, Lord Huntington deliberately bowed in a courtly manner as she, again, sank low into her provocative, precisely-practiced, curtsey.  Still holding her hand, he helped her to stand, all the while looking intently into those gentle green gems that were her eyes.  Not letting go, he carefully, purposefully bent over her hand, lingering, gently placing a kiss upon her soft ungloved hand.  Hearing the intake of her breath, he knew he had surprised her.  Slowly, he stood, absorbedly watching her eyes.  They were wide open, easy to read; her berry lips barely parted, her breathing coming quickly.
Hiccup.
Creighton noticed that Miss Blakemore did this quite often in his company.  Did he truly make her so nervous?  Her sweetness moved him.  Deeply.
His own eyes sparkled as he spoke in his deep, reverberating voice, saying, “I cannot wait to see you in the ball gown that Miss Thompson is making for you—at my request.  I hope you will be pleased.”
Trying to catch her breath, and dare not hiccup again, she faltered, “I…I…thank you for the beautiful new wardrobe and for…for Miss Thompson’s fine talents being shared with me…my lord.”  She blinked several times, suddenly feeling faint.
“You have a naturally grateful heart.  I know that about you.”  Bowing his head graciously, he said, “You are very welcome.”
Nothing could have prepared her for this moment as he gave her the most glorious grin she had ever seen in her life.  He was stunning!  Perfect white teeth surrounded by pale masculine lips—and a dimple she had never noticed before.  Sadly, it was gone before she could get her fill of it.
“Is this lovely gown that you are wearing new?”
Gulping, her throat gone dry, she answered in a cracked voice, “It is, my lord.”  She blushed, squelching a hiccup.
“I must say that it is most flattering…upon…you.”
He grinned enticingly again, her desire to touch his dimple overwhelming.
He continued his conversation, aware of his affect upon her.  “I think it a fine decision to have new gowns made for you.”  His voice crooned over her.
She could not comment, her voice stuck in her throat.  Who was this new Lord Huntington?  Finally, she was able to nod, only once.  This master of hers—he was so devilishly handsome.  His finger caressed under her chin sending a ribbon of shivers throughout her body.  Her intake of breath frightened her.  What was she feeling?  It was so foreign.  So—so delightful!
And then all at once, Lord Huntington gave her a slight bow and walked across the floor with his brusque stride and was gone.
Standing there astonished, she stared after him as if he were a ghost, not actually having been present.  Had she imagined he was here, dancing with her, holding her close, kissing her hand?
Carly thought to herself with a dreamy sigh, if he was a ghost, she would surely desire to be haunted by him.

Sigh...  I love this part.

Monday, October 24, 2011 -- The Governess -- A Twice Weekly Blog

Excerpt from The Governess -- Chapter 19 continued:

Carly was thoroughly enjoying the company of Deborah Thompson, her seamstress.  It was raining again, and only having come to visit and say hello, she ended up spending a couple hours of trying on gowns, helping to stitch some, and talking and laughing at secret revelations.

“I simply adore him, Lady Carly.  It has been my wish since my sixteenth birthday that he would propose marriage to me.”  Deborah was blushing as she divulged her secrets.
Carly’s eyes were wide in amazement at discovering the life, trials, and challenges that this young girl faced.  Realizing that Deborah’s life circumstances had been made better only because of the kindnesses and charity bestowed upon her family by Lord Huntington, and previously by his father, she was astonished at his tender heart towards his tenants and their families’ needs.  Embarrassed at any thoughts to the contrary that she had ever had.
“I must pass his family’s farm each morning on my way here, and he seems to always find a reason to be close by to say hello, or to walk with me a ways.  He is simply wonderful!”  Giggling together, Carly silently wondered what it would be like to be so in love.  Never having known love besides that which she held for her family and friends, she suddenly thought of Lord Huntington and blushed, pricking her finger.  Quickly putting it in her mouth, she listened to Miss Deborah babble.
“Matthew says I should not be walking alone and all, but I must get here somehow.  I think if he could, he would walk with me the entire way.”  Deborah was beaming a beautiful smile as her heart showed upon her face.
“It has been almost a year since anyone has gone missing…I wonder why?  I am so glad, of course, but what has happened to them, do you not wonder?  My brother, Paul, says he thinks they are dead.”
Looking at each other with horror on their faces, Carly exclaimed, “What a ghastly thought!”
As Carly quickly turned ashen, Deborah swiftly changed the subject realizing Lady Carly’s tender heart.  “I have always wanted to be a June bride.  But June is upon us!  I am afraid it will not happen this year.”
“Would you not marry in any other month if your dear Matthew asked you?”  Carly was very curious.
“Of course, but I would be so disappointed.  June brides are so very lovely!”
“But you would look the same, silly—in love—that is how you would look,” Carly exclaimed.
Contemplating Carly’s wise words for a moment, Deborah suddenly asked, “Would you like to see the flower he gave me only just this morning?”  Digging into her bag, Deborah pulled from it a tiny book.  Carefully she opened its pages and pulled from between them a tiny little purple flower that was flattened.
“Is it not beautiful?”
Carly saw that it was merely a small weed that had flowered, but she smiled at Deborah’s enthusiastic response to her special gift from the one she most adored.
“It is quite lovely, Deborah.  I am sure you will treasure it always.”  Amazed and wondering at what Deborah was feeling, she thought to herself that she would very much like to try out this thing called love and the subsequent fluttering of happiness that would accompany it.  She was very happy for her newest friend.

Thanks for reading with me today.  Join me on Friday for a haunting waltz.  :)
